About

Karen Pendergrass is a microbiome researcher specializing in microbiome-targeted interventions (MBTIs). She systematically analyzes scientific literature to identify microbial patterns, develop hypotheses, and validate interventions. As the founder of the Microbiome Signatures Database, she bridges microbiome research with clinical practice. In 2012, based on her own investigative research, she became the first documented case of FMT for Celiac Disease, four years before the first published case study.

Impacts of host genetics on gut microbiome composition in Alzheimer's disease

In 252 Chinese adults, an Anaerostipes-enriched gut microbial subgroup was more abundant in people with better cognition and lower in Alzheimer's disease. Its abundance was negatively correlated with a polygenic risk score for AD, pointing to a genetically shaped, potentially protective gut signature.

Gastrointestinal symptoms of long COVID-19 related to the ectopic colonization of specific bacteria that move between the upper and lower alimentary tract and alterations in serum metabolites

In mild COVID-19 patients with gastrointestinal long-COVID symptoms, gut microbes of the Proteobacteria phylum, including Neisseria, Lautropia and Agrobacterium, ectopically colonized the oral cavity and correlated with potentially harmful serum metabolites. Patients without long-COVID symptoms showed little microbiome change.
