Karen Pendergrass is a microbiome researcher specializing in microbiome-targeted interventions (MBTIs). She systematically analyzes scientific literature to identify microbial patterns, develop hypotheses, and validate interventions. As the founder of the Microbiome Signatures Database, she bridges microbiome research with clinical practice. Prenatal and Peripartum Exposure to Antibiotics and Cesarean Section Delivery Are Associated with Differences in Diversity and Composition of the Infant Meconium Microbiome

In 105 full-term infants, cesarean delivery and both prenatal and peripartum antibiotics were each associated with differences in the meconium microbiome. Proteobacteria dominated meconium at 65 percent, and cesarean-born infants showed altered diversity and lower relative abundance of a facultative anaerobic genus compared with vaginal delivery.

Alterations in the human oral and gut microbiomes and lipidomics in COVID-19

COVID-19 patients showed reduced oral and gut microbial diversity, with fewer butyric-acid-producing and more lipopolysaccharide-producing bacteria. Classifiers built on 8 oral and 7 fecal microbial markers diagnosed COVID-19 with area-under-curve values above 0.87, and diagnosed antibody-positive suspected cases.

Breast cancer in postmenopausal women is associated with an altered gut metagenome

The gut microbiota of postmenopausal breast cancer patients showed higher microbial diversity and 45 differentially abundant species (38 enriched, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Prevotella amnii, and Enterococcus gallinarum) compared with matched controls, whereas premenopausal patients showed no significant compositional differences.
