Bacteroides fragilis is a keystone gut commensal with a dual nature. Its polysaccharide A trains the immune system and protects against colitis, but it is also the most common anaerobic pathogen, and enterotoxigenic strains that make the B. fragilis toxin are linked to colorectal cancer.
