What was studied?

This study asked how the gut microbiota composition differs in elderly people with functional constipation. It aimed to inform the pathogenic mechanism and possible new therapies. Researchers analyzed fecal samples using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. They compared functional constipation patients against healthy age-matched volunteers, examining both overall diversity and the abundance of specific taxa.

Who was studied?

The cohort was human and elderly: 61 patients with functional constipation and 48 healthy age-matched control volunteers. The work was conducted in Shanghai, China. All samples were stool, analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. MeSH indexing confirms an aged and middle-aged human population of both sexes. The comparison was constipation versus healthy, with controls matched for age to reduce age as a confounder.

What were the most important findings?

The gut microbiota of functional constipation patients differed significantly from that of healthy controls. Overall species diversity was greater in the healthy controls than in the constipation group. Some taxa were significantly decreased in constipation patients, while several others were remarkably increased. This indicates a distinct, altered community profile in constipation. MeSH indexing points to shifts across major phyla including Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria between the groups.

What are the greatest implications of this study?

The results indicate that elderly functional constipation is accompanied by a unique gut microbiota profile with reduced diversity. This supports a role for microbial dysbiosis in the condition. The authors suggest the profile may offer insight into constipation mechanisms and guide new therapeutic strategies. Because the design is cross-sectional, it cannot establish whether the microbiota changes cause constipation or arise from it.
