What was studied?
This study compared the vaginal microbiota of women with low-risk HPV infection against healthy controls. Low-risk HPV types 6 and 11 cause most cases of condyloma acuminatum (genital warts). Researchers sequenced the 16S rRNA gene (V3-V4 regions) from vaginal swabs. They assessed diversity, community structure, and differentially abundant taxa using LEfSe.
Who was studied?
Participants were 62 women examined at Jinan Central Hospital, affiliated with Shandong University, in China. This was a human observational study using vaginal swabs. The groups were 20 HPV-negative controls, 21 infected with low-risk HPV type 6, and 21 with type 11. Women under 20 or over 50, and those with immunodeficiency or systemic disease, were excluded. Age and BMI did not differ between groups.
What were the most important findings?
Microbial diversity was significantly higher in the low-risk HPV group by both Shannon and Simpson indices. Community structure separated clearly (ANOSIM R=0.228, p=0.001). Protective Lactobacillus dropped from about 87% of the community in controls to roughly 50% in infected women. Anaerobes rose markedly: Gardnerella about 3-fold, Sneathia about 110-fold, and Bifidobacterium about 147-fold. LEfSe found 69 differentially abundant taxa, 50 higher in the infected group.
What are the greatest implications of this study?
The findings show low-risk HPV infection accompanies a disrupted, less Lactobacillus-dominated vaginal microbiota resembling bacterial vaginosis. This may help explain the high recurrence of genital warts. The altered flora could offer a basis for microecological therapy and better prevention strategies. The study cannot determine whether dysbiosis precedes or follows infection, so causal direction remains unresolved and needs further research.
