What was studied?

This study asked whether low diversity of the infant gut microbiota, rather than any single species, is linked to developing allergic eczema. Researchers tracked bacterial diversity in stool across the first year of life. They used barcoded 16S ribosomal DNA 454-pyrosequencing to characterize the whole microbiome down to genus level.

Who was studied?

The cohort was 40 infants, 20 who developed IgE-associated eczema and 20 without any allergic sign by age two. Stool was sampled at 1 week, 1 month, and 12 months of age. This was a prospective human infant cohort followed from birth. Allergy status was assessed up to two years.

What were the most important findings?

Infants who later developed eczema had lower total microbial diversity at 1 month of age (P=.004). This diversity gap appeared before the eczema itself. They also had lower diversity of the phylum Bacteroidetes and the genus Bacteroides at 1 month (P=.02 and P=.01). The phylum Proteobacteria was lower at 12 months (P=.02). The microbiota was highly variable between infants at 1 month and became more uniform by 12 months. At 12 months, Proteobacteria were more abundant in non-allergic infants.

What are the greatest implications of this study?

The results support the idea that low gut microbial diversity in the first month of life precedes atopic eczema. Timing matters: the early window may be when diversity shapes immune development. This shifts attention from chasing single harmful or protective species toward overall community richness. It suggests early-life diversity could be a meaningful target for allergy research.
